When Viewing Examples of Student Work:

Often a single example of work may not demonstrate all the required objectives for a particular assignment. Instead students should collectively consider: the required objectives for each assignment, the multiple examples presented on this blog and during in class presentations. As well ideas discovered through a student's independent research in combination with various examples and ideas presented by instructor will ultimately be the best approach for synthesizing ideas and reaching the requirements (and unique outcome) for any particular course project.

Examples of Exterior Line Drawings

Drawing Supplies (as indicated in syllabus):
18 x 24 inches cartridge paper pad
pencils (for line drawing)
drawing board
bulldog clips to prevent paper from being blown off board by wind
kneadable eraser
Layers of appropriate clothing for drawing outside

Where to sit near Art Lab:
Select an area that will give you a good sense of deep space and will have subject matter that depicts a progression of space from foreground to middle ground to background.
Select a view point for your composition in the drawing that has some built environment subject matter (buildings, road, light posts, etc) and some natural environment subject matter (trees, bushes, grass, etc)

Set up close to Art Lab building and make sure instructor knows where you are located before you start - if you are far away for the group or do not see anyone from the class where you are located it will most likely mean you will need to move somewhere closer to our group.

How to Start Drawing:
Start: By drawing lightly, map out composition, that describes a deep space (view online examples with deep space), insure to select subject matter that depicts a progression of space from foreground to middle ground to background. Having a slight overlapping of shapes/elements in the foreground to middle ground to background will help clarify that progression of space.

Review Links and examples as you continue on your drawing:

Measuring Proportions and considering where shapes and subject matter line up with each other horizontally and vertically: http://derekbruecknercourseinformation.blogspot.com/2010/04/measuring-when-drawing-still-life.html
The above link shows examples of measuring with horizontal and vertical alignments with still-life, but the same concepts (and ways of seeing) can be applied to this exterior line drawing assignment.

Examples
When viewing assignment examples think about how and where examples address assignment Objectives for Line Drawing and where tyne do not address assignment objectives!
